Caroline Career & Technology Center Cosmetology Program student Ella Beales recently won a gold medal at the SkillsUSA Competition in the category of Cosmetology – Hair, Esthetics, and Nails, held in Westminster, Maryland. Ella will next compete at the National SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta, Georgia in June.
Fellow Cosmetology student Brissia Hernandez also competed in the same category, and their nail models, students Chaise Paswater and Kylie Kaczynski, joined as part of the team attending.
In order to qualify for competition, all students have to be active SkillsUSA members. On their model, competitors had to create five acrylic nails using a two-tone application, create a gel overlay over tip application on five nails, demonstrate polish application, create a nail art theme on five nails, and complete an oral presentation. Prior to the daylong competition, contestants were required to complete an online written exam.
Cosmetology teacher Christine Wright-Gadow shared that this is the first time her students have competed in this specific category, and the first time a CCTC student has placed or won gold in any of the cosmetology competitions. “I am extraordinarily proud of these students for their willingness to compete, and thrilled that Ella was able to bring home a gold medal.”
CCTC Principal Courtney Handte expressed her appreciation for the work involved in preparing students for the SkillsUSA competitions. “Ms. Wright-Gadow and Mr. Butler are both dedicated to our Career and Technical Education students’ involvement and participation in this important event.”
Director of College and Career Readiness Lindsey McCormick said, “Having students engaged in student organizations, such as SkillsUSA, empowers students to become career ready while engaging in activities that foster confidence and leadership. Congratulations to all who competed.”
