Mrs. Smith's AP Chemistry students created a unique periodic table that highlights Black Americans who have made significant contributions in STEM fields. Each element on the table was dedicated to a pioneer in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, from historical figures like George Washington Carver and Mae Jemison to contemporary innovators such as Dr. Shirley Jackson and Mark Dean. They arranged the individuals by their area of impact, visually mirroring the traditional periodic table but with a focus on celebrating Black excellence in STEM. #ColonelTOUGH

While investigating the Northern Lights phenomenon, Mrs. Smith's Chemistry students performed a flame test lab to experience firsthand how different elements produce distinct colors when heated in a flame. The process involves dipping a wooden splint into a metal salt and then placing it into a flame. As the metallic element heat ups, its electrons become excited and release energy in the form of visible light, which we perceive as different colors depending on the element. This lab helped students understand what causes both the Northern Lights as well as various colored produced during fireworks because all the phenomena involve the same basic principle: excited electrons releasing light. Thus, the lab offers a tangible way to grasp the atomic processes that lead to the beautiful colors in the sky above. #ColonelTOUGH

Ms. Thompson's Sociology students conducted a social experiment relating to social norms! Social norms are the unwritten rules that guide our behavior on a daily basis. For this project, students purposefully broke a common social norm to see how their classmates would react to the norm being broken. #ColonelTOUGH

Mrs. Smith's AP Chemistry students made s'mores as a model to learn about limiting and excess reactants in a chemical reaction! This analogy helped students to explore the concept of limiting and excess reactants in a hands-on way before applying mathematical calculations to the concept. Of course, eating their models was their favorite part of the investigation! #ColonelTOUGH
